Thump, Roll, and Rumble – Word Sounds

Day 28 – Phoneme segmentation

For adult learners as well as younger readers, breaking words into sounds using finger taps is a great way to teach the sounds in words.

One example is showing the student cards with the letter sounds, and tapping out the sounds as you make them and say the word.  Here is a video I found online that uses pennies as markers, and you don’t need letter or sound cards.  All you need for this are pennies.

At your house you will lay out the pennies (or whatever marker you want to use) in front of your learning-reader, and you will voice the word, as the instructor in the video does. Your student will listen to you and move the markers appropriately.

Your student will be listening for the number of sounds, and what the sounds are. Multiple skills!  Have fun!

Printables & Resources for Reading Activities (a short list)

Day 15: Letter search activity with free printable

You know, I always think I would do poorly in a place like Japan, where niceties are practiced before you get to the point. I would always much rather get the work over first, and then share the good stuff!  So that is what I’m going to do now. For day 15 of our project, I have some printables and resources.

These adorable flashcards can be found online at supercoolbaby.com. They have lots of other choices for flashcards as well.

This link takes you to a printable that I make for a worksheet your learning-reader can use. It is like a Word-Find, only just for letters.  This one is simple, but you can make them as complicated as your student enjoys.  Feel free to share this with anyone!  And of course, make your own! The way you “play” with this one is have the student circle the letter “a”.  This is all about symbol (letter) recognition.

Another resource… do you have a smart phone? Go to itunes U and look! There are printable for activities (in addition to free classes for you in advanced chemical formulas… yeah, go figure) from learning institutions all over the world.

The first one I look up was under PBS. I downloaded some printables from Word Girl.  And in fact, there are lots of great resources directly on the PBS website. Click on the picture of Word Girl below to go to the page of lesson plans offered from PBS.

Finally, go old school: Make some flashcards! You can use 3 x 5 cards or…

You can even use the computer to help you do it (no, that’s not cheating)… Here is a link for more advanced students (questions and answers).

Here is a great website with lots of flashcards and you can also make your own computerized “cards”:

Happy Monday! I hope you had a blessed weekend. I absolutely did!

Met some great friends, new and old, and rocked out at my church – worship music is such a powerful prayer mechanism for me. I often prayer for my family and friends – and myself – while I sing. Yes, strange but true. It is a great way for me to focus prayer.  I ended the weekend by going out to dinner with hubby and 2 of the kids, paying WAY too much for dinner for 4 people (Ruby Tuesdays) but getting an AWESOME meal. We were blessed that we were able to enjoy that treat this weekend (despite that ouch of a price), and it was fun for the kids to go out.

Mum Anne, one of the new friends from this weekend. She is the founder of the New Hope Children’s Centre.
